Mami Higuchi: Construction of BAREN

 

“Baren” is a Japanese unique tool what developed by wisdom of craftsmen from that follows from the Edo period.

This smooth, light rubbing pad is made of bamboo bark. Used for wood block printing, the strong grain of its tough surface allows the artist to convey pressure firmly and efficiently to the paper.

The techniques of to make real “Baren” is very difficult to master and take a long time. In this Workshop, make a “Baren” used substitute material, however easy to use.

 

–First day: Explanation about the “Baren”.

Cut the plywood, to shape and paint it.

Twist the string, and apply the Shellac.

Dry them overnight.

 

–Second day: Form a core with a string.

Wrap all the parts in a bamboo sheath
