João Cunha e Costa: Façade Tiles Painting – Masking

Masking technique is a simple technique of ceramic printing and is considered a semi-industrial one with a notorious presence in Portuguese urban space.

This demonstration starts by an introduction explaining two aspects related with this technique – the History of its production in Portugal, and the composition of patterns from the repetition of modules. This introduction can make use of a data-show.
For this demonstration two patterns consisting of four tiles each will be reproduced. The masks are acetate sheets where the motifs to be reproduced in the tiles are cut out. For each colour will be used a different mask.  The ceramic ink is applied on tiles that are covered with an unfired glaze. For the first pattern to be reproduced, the paint will be applied with a brush, and for the second one with a sponge.
This practical demonstration will have the following sequence:

– Preparation of the workplace
– Ink application
– Correction of serious defects
– Presentation of fired results
