Georgina Milhazes: Photo-etching – Silkscreen Acrylic Based Resist

One of the easier methods of photo intaglio for the printmaker is the photo-etching. If the traditional method makes use of pre-sensitized zinc plates, in this demonstration, the photographic image will be transferred by means of a silkscreen acrylic based resist.

The objective of the demo will be to demonstrate the photo-mechanical process that drives the photographic image to the metal plate, step by step, and how this particular process allows variations and changes to the original image, the same that gives uniqueness and originality to each photo-etching.

During  the demonstration participants will follow how to prepare a zinc plate from a photo-mechanical process whit silkscreen acrylic based resist.

– introduction and overview of the process;

– looking at the print examples;

-silkscreen preparation;  application of the emulsion on to the silkscreen;

– expose the light sensitive on the silkscreen in contact with negative digital photoimpressed  on acetate;

– transfer the image from the silkscreen to the zinc plate whit acrylic base resist;

– put the plate in to the acid bath. The acid will bite in to the unexposed areas;

– inking the plate and printing;
