The workshop will show three methods of obtaining interesting grained textures in the intaglio techniques of sand aquatint, roulette and salt aquatint. The purpose of the workshop is to broaden the practical skills of the participants in the less commonly used techniques and to enrich their personal vocabulary of artistic effects with new solutions.

All the aforementioned methods start with varnishing the plate with liquid hard ground. Sand aquatint involves the use of sandpaper of different grains which reveals grained structure on the plate. Roulette enables to make dotted lines and textures, it can resemble drawing with a pencil or a crayon. Salt aquatint consists in spreading on the hard ground different grains of salt – from fine to gross. It is possible to proceed with long baths and therefore to obtain profound and rich texture. The textures can be regular and irregular, black or in all shades of grey. These textures are made of dark dots as opposed to classical aquatint which has a structure of white dots. Participants will be guided and encouraged to use different kinds of sandpaper and also to use the pieces of sandpaper as stencils. In the technique of roulette it will be possible to try out classical tools and those hand-made. Salt aquatint will be a field of experimenting with different textures made of different types of grains.

Special simple tools will be constructed to make an even layer of salt. Painterly effects can be obtained by spontaneous spreading of the salt.

The workshop will consist in making three common works in the three techniques. If time permits each participant will make their own mini print in one of the chosen techniques. The next step in developing this research would be to mix all the methods in one plate and to combine them with classical etching.
