Christopher Nowicki: Drawing for Mezzotint

In this workshop we will learn about the traditional mezzotint technique. The history and technical aspects will be presented and discussed in detail. As a start, we will be producing actual tonal sketches from specific spots in Porto, and back to the printmaking studio,  continue to work over copper plates.

The goal of this workshop will be to give people enough information so they will be able to create prints using the mezzotint technique. The focus will be on process, tools and tool sharpening, the effect of different papers and inks, modern innovative techniques and presses. Because of the time consuming nature of this technique the workshop will be focused and intense.

With its beautiful deep blacks and subtle grays mezzotint is sometimes referred to as the ‘Queen of Intaglio Techniques’. It is true, even with today’s technology the rich blacks of mezzotint still cannot be reproduced by other methods. Participants will be able learn how to use this old but unique technique.

Duration: 4 days (16h)

Detailed program for each session:

Day 1: Talk (Introduction to the mezzotint technique with a presentation of the history and tools) + Trip Field (Drawing on site: tonal sketches and other drawing strategies more adequate for mezzotint translation).

Day 2: DEMONSTRATION – open session “Vital Considerations When Printing Mezzotints”. Questions and answers session. Procedures and difficulties

Day 3: In depth focus on the required tools, sharpening methods, and use. Discussion of plate texture and characteristics plus methods of rocking plates. Presentation of the technical relativity within the mezzotint technique with examples of real mezzotints. Discussion of special considerations when working with mezzotint tools. Final discussion and review with question and answers.
